Julia Aaron and David Dennis were among the Freedom Riders trying to integrate interstate buses and terminals in 1961. After the Riders had been greeted by beatings and firebombings during much of their journey, they finally received National Guard protection on this ride, from Montgomery, Ala., to Jackson, Miss. Once they stepped off the bus in Jackson, however, the riders were arrested when they tried to desegregate the station. 
Shutzer's photo perfectly distills the uneasy relationship between the Riders and the men a not-always-benevolent government sent to protect them.

In 1961 Julia Aaron si David Dennis erau printre Cavalerii Libertatii care incercau sa integreze autobuzele interstatale si garile. Dupa ce Cavalerii au fost intampinati, in mare parte a calatoriei lor, cu batai si bombe incendiare, intr-un sfarsit au primit protectia Gardei Nationale pe intreaga distanta de la Montgomery, Alabama pana la Jackson, Mississippi. Insa. in momentul in care au coborat din autobuz in oraselul Jackson, Cavalerii au fost arestati cand au incercat sa inlature segregatia rasiala din gara.
Fotografia realizata de Schutzer surprinde perfect esentialul acestei relatii incomode dintre Cavaleri si oamenii guvernamentali nu-intotdeauna-binevoitori care au fost trimisi sa ii protejeze.
