Leonard McCombe's portrait of Clarence Hailey Long, the 39-year-old foreman of the JA ranch in the Texas Panhandle, so completely embodied the rugged, romantic spirit of the West, that advertising giant Leo Burnett used it as the model for a long-running and highly successful ad campaign: the Marlboro Man.
